September 1st Storm Update: Shelter Established at Grace Smith Elementary, Impacted to call 1-800-RED-CROSS for Assistance

IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA – The County of Imperial and Imperial County Fire Department & Office of Emergency Services wish to update the community on the unanticipated significant weather event, "September 1st Storm," that has caused extensive damage across Imperial County, with the community of Niland being severely impacted.

For those affected by the storm, the American Red Cross offers disaster assistance. Residents can contact them at 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Additionally, individuals interested in supporting relief efforts are encouraged to make monetary donations. Please call the aforementioned number or visit www.RedCross.org and earmark donations for the "Imperial County September 1st Storm." For those interested in making monetary and non-monetary donations, contact the Niland Chamber of Commerce at (760) 675-5661.

Assessments and referrals are also actively being conducted by the Red Cross and the Imperial County Department of Social Services (DSS). These assessments are taking place at the Niland Fire Department located at 8071 Luxor Ave, Niland, CA 92257.

For residents in need of shelter, one has been established at Grace Smith Elementary, located at 9 E 4th St, Niland, CA 92257. Impacted individuals can call 800-RED-CROSS or report directly to the site for immediate assistance. In addition, Red Cross and DSS staff will be on site to provide assistance and referrals.

In addition to these assessments, the Imperial County Department of Public Works has been working tirelessly around the clock to assess and repair damaged roads. The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) is diligently working to restore power to the affected regions. As of 1:00 PM, all power has been restored to the community of Niland. To report any power outages, call the IID at 1-800-303-7756.

IID's East Highline Canal east of Niland is temporary out of service due to an influx of rain and silt. The district is working to make repairs, but 133 water delivery gates north of Flowing Wells on the EHL will be temporarily out of service until late Monday afternoon, when full restoration is expected.
