Instrumentation Technician

News & Updates

Industry Information

Instrumentation Technicians play an essential role in keeping today's highly automated industrial facilities operating safely, efficiently, and reliably. These skilled professionals install, maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate, and repair the instruments and control systems used to monitor and manage industrial processes.

Instrumentation and control systems are found throughout a wide variety of industries, including geothermal energy, renewable energy, water and wastewater treatment, manufacturing, agriculture, utilities, power generation, and other industrial operations.

In Imperial County, where industries such as agriculture, geothermal energy, utilities, and water management are important to the regional economy, trained Instrumentation Technicians can provide valuable technical skills to local employers.

Instrumentation systems measure and control critical variables such as:

  • Temperature
  • Pressure
  • Flow
  • Level
  • Process conditions
  • Equipment performance
  • Automated system operations

Technicians may work with sensors, transmitters, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), control valves, electrical and electronic equipment, industrial communication systems, and other automated process-control technologies.

As industrial facilities continue to incorporate increasingly sophisticated automation and control systems, employers need technicians who understand both the equipment and the processes those systems control. Technical education and hands-on training can help prepare students to troubleshoot complex systems, maintain industrial equipment, interpret technical information, and work safely in industrial environments.

Career Opportunities

Training in Instrumentation Technology can help prepare students for employment in positions such as:

  • Instrumentation Technician
  • Instrument and Controls Technician
  • Industrial Maintenance Technician
  • Process Control Technician
  • Calibration Technician
  • Automation Technician
  • Electrical and Instrumentation Technician
  • Plant Maintenance Technician

The skills developed through Instrumentation Technician education can be applied across multiple industries, giving students the opportunity to pursue careers locally as well as throughout California and beyond.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Opportunities for High School and ROP Students

Imperial Valley College works with area high schools and the Imperial Valley Regional Occupational Program (ROP) to create pathways that can help students transition from high school Career Technical Education into college-level programs.

Through approved articulation agreements, eligible students may have opportunities to earn college credit for qualifying coursework completed while attending a participating high school or ROP program.

Students participating in an articulated course must meet the requirements established for the applicable agreement, which may include successfully completing the course, earning the required grade, and completing an IVC Credit-by-Exam assessment when applicable.

Eligible students should work with the appropriate Imperial Valley College office to determine requirements for receiving college credit and having eligible coursework posted to their official IVC transcript.

For information regarding current articulation opportunities related to Instrumentation Technician or other CTE programs, please contact Imperial Valley College for the most current articulation agreements and eligibility requirements.
