Industrial Automation

News & Updates

Industry Information

Industrial Automation plays an increasingly important role in today's workforce as industries use advanced technology to improve productivity, efficiency, safety, and reliability. Industrial Automation professionals help install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and improve the automated equipment and control systems that keep modern facilities running.

Automation technology is used across a wide variety of industries, including agriculture, renewable and geothermal energy, manufacturing, food production and processing, water and wastewater treatment, utilities, logistics, and other industrial operations.

In Imperial County, automation is becoming increasingly important as local industries incorporate new technologies into agricultural operations, energy production, water management, processing facilities, and other areas of the regional economy. Individuals with skills in industrial automation can help employers maintain these increasingly sophisticated systems while adapting to new technologies and changing workforce needs.

Industrial Automation combines several technical areas and may involve working with:

  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Industrial electrical systems
  • Sensors and instrumentation
  • Motors and motor controls
  • Robotics and automated equipment
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Process control systems
  • Industrial communication and networking
  • Troubleshooting and preventive maintenance
  • Automated production and processing equipment

As technology continues to transform the workplace, employers need individuals who can work with both traditional industrial equipment and modern automated systems. Technical education and hands-on training can help students develop the skills needed to diagnose problems, maintain equipment, understand automated processes, and work safely in industrial environments.

Career Opportunities

Education and training in Industrial Automation can help prepare students for employment in positions such as:

  • Industrial Automation Technician
  • Automation Technician
  • Industrial Maintenance Technician
  • Controls Technician
  • PLC Technician
  • Robotics Technician
  • Electrical and Controls Technician
  • Process Control Technician
  • Manufacturing Technician
  • Mechatronics Technician
  • Plant Maintenance Technician
  • Industrial Systems Technician

The combination of electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and automation skills can provide students with a versatile technical foundation that may be applied across multiple industries.

Supporting the Future of Imperial County's Workforce

Industrial Automation is particularly relevant as employers continue to adopt technologies designed to automate processes, improve efficiency, reduce downtime, and increase productivity.

For Imperial County, these skills can support both established and emerging industries. Agriculture increasingly relies on automated equipment and technology, while geothermal and renewable energy facilities depend on sophisticated monitoring and control systems. Water and wastewater facilities, manufacturing operations, and other industrial employers also rely on automation to maintain safe and efficient operations.

By preparing students to understand, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot these technologies, Imperial Valley College's Industrial Automation program can help develop a skilled local workforce while providing students with opportunities to pursue high-skill technical careers.

Career Technical Education (CTE) Opportunities for High School and ROP Students

Imperial Valley College works with area high schools and the Imperial Valley Regional Occupational Program (ROP) to create pathways that can help students transition from high school Career Technical Education into college-level programs.

Through approved articulation agreements, eligible students may have opportunities to earn college credit for qualifying coursework completed while attending a participating high school or ROP program.

Students participating in an articulated course must meet the requirements established for the applicable agreement, which may include successfully completing the course, earning the required grade, and completing an IVC Credit-by-Exam assessment when applicable.

Eligible students should work with the appropriate Imperial Valley College office to determine requirements for receiving college credit and having eligible coursework posted to their official IVC transcript.

For information regarding current articulation opportunities related to Industrial Automation or other CTE programs, please contact Imperial Valley College for the most current articulation agreements and eligibility requirements.
