CalKIDS

CalKIDS provides college savings accounts for eligible California public school students — including low-income and foster youth students.

California Chafee Grant 

The Chafee Grant provides eligible current and former foster youth with up to $4,500 for the 2026–2027 academic year. The money can help pay for college, books, supplies, transportation, childcare, housing, and other educational expenses. 

The grant does not need to be repaid, but funding is limited—apply early! 

Who May Qualify? 

You may qualify if you: 

• Were in foster care for at least one day between ages 16 and 18 
• Are under age 26 as of July 1 of the award year 
• Are enrolled in at least six units 
• Meet satisfactory academic progress requirements 
• Have not received Chafee for more than five years 

How to Apply 

1. Complete a Financial Aid Application https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa 
2. Complete the Chafee Grant Application  https://mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/chafee 

You will need your Social Security number or Dream Act ID and information about your foster care history.
