Join Puente
IVC PUENTE hopes you will be part of its next cohort! The program is open to all IVC
students. New cohorts begin every fall. Read through the program eligibility requirements
below and complete steps during the spring or summer to enroll in the cohort that
will begin the following fall.
Eligibility
- Must have an English placement of English 101 and can not have already taken English
101
- Must enroll in paired conseling courses, specifically for PUENTE
- Must attend scheduled evening and weekend PUENTE activities
- Must participate in Mentor Activities
- Work no more than 20 hrs/week
- Must be university transfer bound
- Make a one-year commitment to the PUENTE Learning community
- Participate and attend PUENTE club meetings
- Note: full-time enrollment is not mandatory
Requirments:
Are planning on transferring to a four year university
Are eligible to enroll in English 110 or 105 for the fall semester.
Have not completed Counseling 100 & Counseling 120.
Are able to commit to program requirements.
Are able to be full time students (enrolled in 12 units or more).
Counseling services
Puente counselors provide:
- Assistance with educational, career, and personal goals.
- Counseling courses to assist the student with college success strategies, transfer
options, career exploration, decision-making and study and leadership skills (Counseling
200 & 150).
- Encouragement for students to further their educational goal.
- A "familia" community in and out of the classroom.
- Assistance with navigating the university process and college-prep curriculum for
transfer including transfer applications, letters of recommendation and financial
aid process.
English Instruction
- Complete college level English as well as critical thinking English (English 100S
& 103).
- Develop and enhance writing skills through processed centered and community-based
writing assignments.
- Focus on Latinx Literature and readings.
- English 100S course is designated as an "Honors" section.
- Students who successfully complete the English 100S course with a "B" grade or higher
will earn "Honors" credit and be provisionally accepted into theScholars' Honors Program.
Steps to Join Puente
1: Enroll as a student at IVC. Apply to ???
2: Fill out the PUENTE Interest form
3: PUENTE will contact you to meet with a counselor to develop your Student Educational
Plan
4: Attend the PUENTE summer retreat to learn more about PUENTE benefits and commitment
