PUENTE

A National Model for Student Success

The PUENTE Project Program is an academic, counseling and mentoring program of support for students to build the skills necessary for success in both academic and career goals at Imperial Valle College. Students enrolled in the PUENTE program work closely with their Counselor, English Instructor and Mentor to prepare for transfer to four-year university.

The Puente Project is a nationally recognized academic, counseling, and mentoring program designed to help students successfully navigate college, transfer to a four-year university, and achieve their personal, academic, and career goals. Through a strong community of support, students work closely with their Puente Counselor, English Instructor, and Mentor while developing the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed for long-term success.

At Imperial Valley College, Puente empowers students to build meaningful connections, strengthen their academic foundation, and prepare for transfer to a university while celebrating their cultural experiences and personal strengths.

The Puente Project Includes Three Integrated Components:

Counseling Component

The Puente Counselor provides comprehensive academic, personal, and career counseling to help students develop a clear pathway toward transfer and career success. Students enroll in COUN 100 during the fall semester, where they explore their career and academic goals, develop success strategies, and create a personalized academic plan.

During the spring semester, students continue receiving support through Puente counseling workshops designed to strengthen their academic journey, enhance transfer readiness, and connect them with valuable campus and community resources. Family engagement, leadership development, and university exploration are also important components of the Puente experience, helping students build a strong support network for success.

English Component

The Puente English sequence is designed to strengthen students' writing, critical thinking, and communication skills while fostering confidence as scholars and future university students.

Students take ENGL C1000 in the fall semester and ENGL C1001 in the spring semester with the same Puente English instructor. This year-long learning experience creates a supportive classroom community where students engage with culturally relevant literature and develop their writing through personal reflection, analysis, research, and argumentation.

The curriculum incorporates multicultural voices while helping students sharpen the academic skills needed for transfer-level success. Students are encouraged to connect their experiences, communities, and mentoring relationships to their academic work, creating meaningful and authentic learning opportunities.

Mentoring Component

A unique feature of the Puente Project is its mentoring program. Each student is matched with a trained community mentor who serves as a professional role model, source of encouragement, and guide throughout the academic year.

Puente mentors generously volunteer their time to support students as they explore career opportunities, develop professional skills, and expand their networks. Through one-on-one mentoring relationships, students gain valuable insight into educational and career pathways while building the social and cultural capital needed to thrive in college and beyond.
