Computer Use Policies

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to affirm the library's role in providing access to technology, including the Internet, and to clarify library users' responsibilities associated with Internet and technology use in the library. 

General Statement

The IVC Library provides computers and Internet access in support of the Library's mission to provide equitable access to a diverse collection of materials and to teach students how to find, access, and critically evaluate information. 

Computer use is an extension of the instructional process and shall be consistent with the College's mission, vision, and values. Library computers are located in public areas and shared by people of all ages and backgrounds. Be considerate and respectful of other library users.

Priority Usage 

All current IVC students, employees, and residents of the Imperial Valley College district may use the public access computers in the IVC Library.  IVC students using the computer for research or completing assignments are given priority over other computer activities. Persons using computers for non-instructional activities will be asked to relinquish their workstation when students with class related assignments are waiting.  The Library staff reserves the right to limit time on computers during times of peak demand.  

Library User Responsibilities 

• Library users are expected to follow the IVC Standards of Student Conduct. 
• Computer use is a privilege, not a right. Violation of computer policies and procedures may lead to loss of access to computing resources, as well as to disciplinary and/or legal action.  
• Illegal downloading and use of copyrighted material are prohibited. It is your responsibility to know the copyright© laws.  See our Copyright© Information Section for help.  
• Computer use must be within the bounds of Federal and State law. Specific law prohibits actions such as, but not limited to, tampering with computer hardware of software, unauthorized entry into computers and software accounts, vandalism, or destruction of computer files.  
• Resources available on the Internet may be potentially offensive. Users must respect the rights of others. For example, displaying on-screen images, sounds or messages that create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment for others is prohibited.  
• Unauthorized sharing and/or attempting to access computer accounts for other users is prohibited.  
• Excessive noise and/or creating a disturbance may result in the restriction of use and/or disciplinary action.  

• Information obtained from Internet resources may be inaccurate or misleading. The College cannot be held accountable for the authenticity of information gathered from these sources.  
• Technical difficulties will occur. The College is not responsible for any information that may be lost, damaged or unavailable due to technical or other difficulties.
