Student Guidelines
Acceptable Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Ethical use of AI tools in college coursework requires thoughtful, intentional decision-making
and transparency. Students are expected to complete their own work and to clearly
indicate any sources or tools they have used to do so.
Acceptable use might include:
- Using Grammarly to check grammar and sentence structure
- Brainstorming ideas with a generative AI like ChatGPT (when permitted)
- Creating rough drafts with AI that are then heavily revised, documented, and cited
Unacceptable use, unless explicitly authorized, includes:
- Submitting AI-generated content as your own work
- Using AI to complete quizzes, discussion forum posts, essays, or exams
- Using AI with instructor permission, but failing to check the output for accuracy,
quality, and biases or to appropriately cite your work
Communicating With Your Instructor About AI
If you're unsure whether or how you can use an AI tool for an assignment, follow these
guidelines:
- Ask early—preferably before you begin the assignment
- Be specific: “Can I use Grammarly to review this essay?” or “Am I allowed to use ChatGPT
to brainstorm for this project?”
- Check your syllabus or any announcements for AI-related expectations
- Respect the course policy, even if it differs from other instructors’ policies
