Teach-A-Song Project

Music 102 ~ Jacklich

You are to work in groups of four students.  Depending on our class enrollment, there may have to be one or more groups that have only three students or possibly even a single group of five students.  You are to meet as a group to choose a song that you are going to teach to our class and to develop your plans for teaching that song.  The song may be from any source you choose.  It may not be any of the songs I have demonstrated or we have sung during the course of the semester.

There is a good selection of music resources located in the Main SDSU Library.  THE MUSIC CONNECTION is probably the most practical as well as the easiest-to-use resource in the SDSU Library.  Information on THE MUSIC CONNECTION integrated music curriculum series can be found on the next page in this packet.  Additionally, there are more music books in the Library shelves.  The call letters are LT4500 and this section can be found on the 4th floor almost immediately west of the elevators and stairs.

Your group should plan on spending 10 minutes teaching the song to the class during either our 12/11/03 class session - I will have sign-up sheets in class.  Each member of your group must actively contribute in the planning and implementation of this project.  Each member is expected to participate in the leading of the singing of the song as well as at least one other musical activity - recorder, piano, tone bells, percussion, clapping, etc.  Each member of your group must be involved in the direct instruction of the song.  It is up to you as a group to plan, practice and execute this project.  Each group will prepare a lesson plan for their project.  The specific style of the lesson plan is up to your group.  Your lesson plan must be typed, cite the source of your song, include a copy of the music for your song (if your source utilizes printed music) and must be duplicated in sufficient quantities so that every member of our class may have a copy after you have made your presentation.  Sample lesson plans are included in this packet.

The primary goal is to teach the song; to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts we have dealt with in this class.  The secondary goal is to integrate as many concepts (both musical and cross-curricular) as possible.  Creativity is strongly encouraged.

The project is worth a maximum of 100 points.  The points are distributed as follows:

Each member of the group will complete and submit a confidential “Peer Evaluation.”  In the “Peer Evaluation,” you are to give each member of the group, including yourself, a score for each of the categories.  The Peer Evaluation form follows this page.  These Peer Evaluations are not the sole source for determining an individual group member’s preparation and participation points.  They are my windows into the interactions of the group.
