President’s Concert -Three Palomar College music ensembles wrap up the season with a major concert featuring spirited and beautiful pieces. The Palomar Chorale, Chamber Singers and Symphony Orchestra perform the annual President's Concert at the college's Howard Brubeck Theatre. "Each year we honor Palomar College's graduating students by inviting them to be our guests at this concert," explained Performing Arts Chairperson Joe Stanford. "In addition, we shine the spotlight on some of our outstanding music students. This year, Katie Miller who plays trumpet in both the Palomar Symphony Orchestra and the Palomar Jazz Ensemble will be featured with the orchestra in a selection from Franz Josef Haydn's Trumpet Concerto," Stanford said. Following welcoming remarks by Palomar College President Sherrill L. Amador, the concert opens with the Chamber Singers, conducted by David Chase. Solos and duets by students, are featured in spirituals and light-hearted songs based on poems by e.e.cummings. The Palomar Symphony follows with Johannes Brahms' Academic Festival Overture and Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. One by Ottorino Respighi, in addition of the Haydn concerto. Palomar's Chorale, Chamber Singers, and Orchestra combine in the final concert piece. The 135-member ensemble will perform Schicksaslied, Opus 54 (Song of Destiny), Brahms' lyric and beautiful composition based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin. Dr. Stanford selected and conducts this piece. "Dr. Chase and I felt that combining the Chorale and Chamber Singers for this oratorio-style work would benefit the younger singers," Dr. Stanford said. "It gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the experience of performing this emotional and romantically expressive piece." Concert tickets are $6.00 for students, $8.00 for staff and seniors (ages 55 and up), and $10.00 for general audience. For tickets and information contact the Howard Brubeck Box Office at 760-744-1150, ext. 2453.
