American White Pelican - (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos)

American White Pelican photo copyright by James E. Kuhn Large flocks of White Pelicans are mainly winter visitors to the Salton Sea as well as Imperial Valley freshwater lakes - although it seems some are always present at the sea.

I have watched them circle over my head and then land in the water nearby.

After they land in the water, I have watched them feed together - herding the fish in front of them, then dipping down to grab them, with Cormorants fishing all around under the water, while Terns and Brown Pelicans dive from the air in front of the flotilla to snatch a fish of their own. Magnificent!

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html

They present photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds - including the American White Pelican

Pelican Links - An Alberta, Canada, site with photos and other pelican resource links presented by "Ray's Web Pages" - just like me, he does pages for free about things he is interested in (his pages are way better  - I wonder where he finds the time?). Take a look at his home page: raysweb.net
