Prairie Falcon - (Falco mexicanus)

Prairie Falcon photo copyright by James E. Kuhn Similar in size to the Peregrine Falcon, it is also larger than the more commonly seen resident American Kestrel which it resembles.

The Prairie Falcon's plumeage is pale brown rather than gray.

This Winter visitor to the Imperial Valley also prefers drier, open areas away from water - while the Peregrine Falcon prefers open areas near water.
