Red-Necked (Northern) Phalarope - (Phalaropus lobatus)

Red-necked Phalarope photo copyright by James E. Kuhn Migratory visitor to the Imperial Valley's Salton Sea, this winter traveler winters in South American waters.

Prefers open water for feeding and - like all phalaropes - "spins" as it feeds.

Compare with the Wilson's Phalarope, another valley visitor.

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html

They present photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds - including the Red-Necked Phalarope

OTHER OUTSIDE LINKS FOR THIS BIRD:

A Mono Lake Story - "The Phalarope" is a nice tale written by David Carle, a park ranger at California's Mono Lake where phalaropes gather every summer.

Fetlar Phalaropes - I had been looking for an appropriate British Isles web site that I could link to my site for some time. This one is about the Shetland Islands and includes the largest breeding population of Red-necked Phalaropes in the UK. Great photos of this and other species.
