Lesser Scaup - (Aythya affinis)

Lesser Scaup photo copyright by James E. Kuhn A Winter visitor to Imperial Valley freshwater ponds and lakes; usually in pairs or small groups.

Look for the male's glossy purple head with blue bill.

Similar in appearance to the Ring-Necked Duck, which has a pronounced white ring on its bill.
