Belted Kingfisher - (Ceryle alcyon)

Belted Kingfisher photo copyright by James E. Kuhn This commonly seen visitor to the Imperial Valley is resident except during the hot Summer months.

It likes to use the telephone lines alongside irrigation canals to perch on while scanning the water for small fish.

It will dive into the water from its perch to grab an underwater meal.

They make a loud "chattering" call when disturbed or when fighting.
