Brown Pelican - (Pelecanus occidentalis)

Brown Pelican photo copyright by James E. Kuhn The disasterous bird kill during the Summer of 1996 at the Salton Sea probably had the greatest effect on the already endangered Brown Pelican. Before that time I would see small groups of them feeding and resting at Fig Lagoon, a freshwater lake in the Imperial Valley near Seeley. Since then, I see lonely individuals - alone or accompanying groups of White Pelicans for companionship - even feeding with them on the surface instead of doing their usual habit of diving for dinner.

Recent efforts being made to help clean up the Salton Sea may help the Brown Pelican and other affected birds to recover their numbers.

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html

They present photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds - including the Brown Pelican
