Anna's Hummingbird - (Calypte anna)

Anna's Hummingbird photo copyright by James E. Kuhn
Very common in other areas of Southern California, this visitor to the Imperial Valley enjoys our warm winter temperatures and early spring, but leaves when it gets too hot.

Our more commonly seen Costa's and Black-Chinned hummers have purple throats while the Anna's hummer has a red throat.

If you see a hummingbird nest locally, it is likely to be a Black-Chinned's. Anna's seem to prefer southeastern Arizona.
