American Pipit - (Anthus rubescens)

American Pipit photo copyright by James E. Kuhn
Winter flocks of these small, brown birds can be found in fallow fields of the Imperial Valley.

Look for their 'bobbing' tails as they search for bugs.

Also known by the common name "Water Pipit."

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html
