Matriculation

Matriculation is a state-mandated program that enhances access to the California Community Colleges and promotes and sustains the efforts of students to be successful in their educational endeavors.

General Matriculation Procedures

Matriculation Rights and Responsibilities

Matriculation is a process which assists you in choosing, planning, and achieving your educational and career goals. It is IVC's way of supporting your right to succeed in college. Matriculation is a partnership between you and Imperial Valley College.

IVC agrees to:

  • Help students to succeed in their college careers.
  • Assist students in making decisions based on accurate information
  • Offer services and resources for proper course selection
  • Provide an opportunity to develop a Student Education Plan (SEP).

You agree to:

  • Select an educational goal or major by the semester following the completion of 15 semester units.
  • Register for classes.
  • Attend class regularly.
  • Meet with a counselor to develop a Student Education Plan (SEP).
  • Request additional services when needed.
  • Complete your educational goal.

Prior to registration, all non-exempt students must complete the following steps that apply:

  • Complete on-line application for admission.
  • Send in all transcripts from other colleges.
  • Complete an orientation and take placement tests.
  • Meet with a counselor for proper selection of courses.

New, returning, or transfer students who may be exempted from the matriculation process are students who:

  • Already have an associate's or bachelor's degree
  • Are attending IVC for personal enrichment
  • Are enrolled only in non-credit community education courses
  • Are taking classes only to upgrade job skills
  • Are enrolled in apprenticeship or other special vocational education programs
  • Are concurrently enrolled in high school or other colleges

Exempt students are not required to participate in the matriculation process but are encouraged to see a counselor at any time.

The college may suspend or terminate services to any student who fails to fulfill his/her responsibilities. However, the college may never suspend or terminate any service for which a student is otherwise entitled under any other provision of law. In addition, students may challenge any Matriculation requirement or regulation using the petition process found in the IVC catalog.
