Orientations

Teacher info

  • A one-hour introduction to the Reading Lab, with emphasis on the Reading Plus program.
  • Arranged by appointment = Click to see appointment schedule for this semester.
  • Bring your roster with add/crash/drop information so we can enter your students in the Reading Plus program.

Student info

  • Students will complete the Reading Placement Appraisal (RPA) for comprehension, speed, and vocabulary.
  • Students are informed of assignments, deadlines, rules, and procedures, and are given a Reading Plus worksheet for recording their time.

Assignments

  • Assignments begin Saturdays at 9:00 A.M. and end two weeks later on Fridays at 1:45 P.M.
  • There are six two-week assignment blocks during the semester.
  • There are three types of assignments:
  • Reading Plus – Completion is based on completing 2.5 hours every two weeks (3 hours for online classes).
  • Book assignments – Completion is based on finishing the entire exercise to completion standards and having it signed by a tutor.
  • Phonics – Completion is based on listening to all of the assigned lessons and successfully demonstrating correct pronunciation for each sound.
  • Assignments are printed on student calendars and on the Reading Plus worksheet.

Deadlines

  • Assignments are due every second Friday at 1:45 P.M.
  • There are no extensions – Students cannot make up work for which a deadline has passed.
  • Phonics diagnostics tests for 086, 087, and 088 are required. If the diagnostic test is not completed, the student cannot work on phonics exercises scheduled during the following Block, which means that the student will not receive credit for two Block assignments.
  • Students working on Reading Plus at home must follow the same deadlines as do students who work on it in the Lab.

Reading Plus at Home

  • Students may work on Reading Plus at home (or on any off-campus computer) if they have completed at least one assignment in the Lab, understand how the Reading Plus program works, have a high speed Internet connection, and have a current email address.
  • Students must sign a contract in the Reading Lab before doing Reading Plus at home.
  • Students who do Reading Plus at home need to comply with all deadlines and complete all book and phonics assignments in the Lab.

Drops

  • Please notify (email or telephone) the Reading Lab (X. 391) of students who drop your class; we need their names and ID numbers.

Bi-weekly reports

  • The Lab will issue two reports at the end of each two-week assignment Block:

Y/N Report
Y = Students have completed
the book and phonics work.
N = Students have not completed
the book and phonics work Reading Plus Report

Reading Plus Report
The time stated show the time completed during the assignment Block.
