Northern Rough-Winged Swallow - (Stelgidopteryx serripennis)

Northern Rough-Winged Swallow photo copyright by James E. Kuhn Acrobats of the air, these swallows build grass nests in crevices under the many bridges spanning our two Imperial Valley rivers, our freeway overpasses and our larger irrigation canals. Also uses holes or burrows for nesting along the banks.

Other Swallows visit the Valley during migration and some reside here in our winter months, but they are not around during our hot summer months like this resident.

Compare its drab colors and square tail with the Cliff Swallow, Barn Swallow, and Tree Swallow.
