I added this bird to my Imperial Valley life
list on a field trip I took during the first International Salton Sea Bird
Festival in 1997.
We were told to look for them wintering in fallow dirt fields near the sea. Sure enough, we found them along with flocks of Killdeer. If we had not been looking carefully for them, we would not have seen them - since they looked just like clods of dirt in their winter plumage. Now, whenever I see flocks of Killdeer in fallow fields, I take another look for these fall and winter visitors. |
