House Sparrow - (Passer domesticus)

House Sparrow photo copyright by James E. Kuhn Also called an English Sparrow, actually it is not a sparrow at all! It is a species of Weaver Finch.

This year-round resident is the most commonly seen bird at Imperial Valley College. It nests under the eaves of nearly every building on campus.

Many people may consider this bird to be a pest... but they do help clean up the mess left outdoors at the cafeteria area after students have finished eating lunch.

Similar to the White-Crowned Sparrow - also a common sight year-round.

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html

They present photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds - including the House Sparrow
