Black-Headed Grosbeak - (Pheucticus melanocephalus)

Black-headed Grosbeak photo copyright by James E. Kuhn This bright-colored songbird winters in nearby Mexico.

On its way, it will stop to feed on fruiting Mulberry trees and visit backyard feeders in the Imperial Valley.

Males are quite spectacular (like the one in this photo) but the female is drab and less colorful.

If you are interested in learning more about this bird online - I recommend you start with the Patuxent Bird Identification InfoCenter, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/Infocenter/infocenter.html

They present photographs, songs, identification tips, maps, and life history information for North American birds - including the Black-Headed Grosbeak
